Adam lived 930 years.
Gen 5:5
“So all the days that Adam lived were
nine hundred and thirty years, and he died.”
Adam lived 930 years, and then he died. Did Adam live
930 years from the time he was created to the time he
died, or did he live 930 years from the time he fell
from Gods grace until the time he died? Genesis 5:5 says
“So all the days of Adam were”. The Bible says all the
days of Adam, not all the days from the time Adam fell
from Gods grace. Therefore it is reasonable to assume
that Adam lived 930 years from the time he was created
until the day he died.

The Bible does not tell us how long Adam
lived in the Garden of Eden before the fall, nor does it
tell us how old Adam was when God created Eve. How long
did Adam and Eve live in the Garden of Eden before they
fell from God’s grace, one day, one month, six months,
one years, or one decade. In all the years I have heard
preachers give sermons on the first three chapters of
Genesis, I have never heard one ask this question. Yet
it is a good question, and it is worth thinking about.
Adam and Eve had many children (Gen 5:4); the Bible only
names three, Cain, Abel, and Seth. We are not told how
old Adam was when Cain and Abel were born, but the Bible
does document the story of Cain and Abel in Gen 4: 1-17.
We are told that Cain (Adams oldest son) killed Abel
(Adams second son); as a result God did not allow Cain
to be part of the genetic line to Christ.
The Bible tells us that Adam and Eve had a third son
which they named Seth (Gen 4:25), Adam was 130 years old
when Seth was born.
Gen 5:3
“When Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years, he
became the father of a son in his own likeness,
according to his image, and named him Seth.”

Enoch lived 365 years,
but did not die. He was translated or taken up by the
spirit of God, see Hebrews 11:5. Note, the prophet
Elijah was also translated (2 Kings 2:10-11). Also see 1
Thessalonians 4:17 and 1 Corinthians 15:51, those
believers who are alive at the Rapture will be changed
in a twinkling of an eye, to meet the Lord in the air.
Only two people in recorded history have been
translated.
Gen 5:23-24

Methuselah was the longest recorded
living person to live on this earth, he lived 969 years.
The year he died the flood came bringing judgment to the
earth, only those who entered the ark were spared from
Gods judgment.
His death was significant as his name means “when he
dies it shall come or be sent forth”, so he was a living
warning that at his death God was going to do something
significant on the earth.
His birth produced a miracle, and his death brought
judgement on the earth. The Bible says that Enoch his
father lived 65 years before he was born. But after his
birth Enoch walked with God for three hundred years. Not
until Elijah the prophet would the Bible record that
another person “walked with God”. It appears that the
birth of his son Methuselah and the significance of the
meaning of his name caused Enoch to draw closer to God.
Methuselah was 187 when he had a son called Lamech.
Gen 5:25
“Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty seven years,
and became the father of Lamech.”

“So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty

|
|
Noah died 2006 years after creation |
|
2006 |
2005BC |
|
When I mapped the BC years onto the
timeline, it intrigued me that Noah died 2006 years
after creation, which works out to be the year 2005BC.
Approximately half way through the Old Testament age,
this is even more significant that a couple of years
after Noah died, Abraham was born.
This is the first place in scripture that we can do a
check on our calculations, as the Bible gives us more
information about Noah and his family.
(1) Noah was 600 years old when the flood came.
Gen 7:6
“Now Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of
water came upon the earth.”
Also see;
Gen 7:11
“In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the
second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on
the same day all the fountains of the great deep burst
open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened.”
Noah was born in the year 1056 after creation then the
flood came in the year 1656, i.e. 1056 + 600 = 1656, or
2355BC. This was the year Methuselah died, we know from
the meaning of his name that when he died it would come
or be sent (see my comments on Methuselah).
(2) Noah lived 350 years after the flood.
Gen 9:28
“And Noah lived three hundred and fifty years after
the flood.”
Noah was born 1056 years after creation, and he was 950
years old when he died, 1056 + 950 = 2006 years after
creation. Therefore, the flood occurred 2006 – 350 =
1656 years after creation, or 2355BC.
The Holy Spirit in Gen 7:11 has recorded some
interesting information for us.
Gen 7:11 reads.
“In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the
second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on
the same day all the fountains of the great deep burst
open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened.”
The Holy Spirit has recorded for us the exact time that
the flood began, in the six hundredth year of Noah’s
life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the
month.
Compare this to Gen 8:13-16
“Now it came about in the six hundred and first year
(of Noah’s life, see previous verses), in the first
month, on the first of the month, the waters dried up
from the earth. Then Noah removed the covering of the
ark, and looked and behold, the surface of the ground
was dried up. (14) And in the second month, on the
twenty seventh day of the month, the earth was dry. Then
God spoke to Noah, saying, “Go out of the ark, you and
your wife, your sons and your sons’ wives with you.”
The Holy Spirit has also recorded the exact time the ark
landed and the exact time Noah and his family left the
ark. Noah was 600 went the flood started; Noah was 601
when the ark landed.
The flood started in the second month, the Ark landed in
the first month.
The flood started on the seventeenth day of the month,
the Ark landed on the first of the month.
The calendar in the ancient world consisted of 12
months, each having 30 days in each month; this gave a
year of 360 days. Therefore the Ark was afloat for 10
months and 16 days. Noah and his family left the Ark, 1
year and 10 days after the flood began.
Noah was 500 when he had his first son.
Gen 5:32
“And Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah became
the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.”
Many Bible teachers and theologians place Shem as Noah’s
oldest son. They conclude this for three main reasons.
(1) Shem is mentioned first in Gen 5:32 and Gen 9:18
where Noah’s sons are listed.
(2) Shem is listed in the Bible as the son of Noah who
carries on the blood line to Christ. Traditionally this
is the birth right, passed on from the father to the
oldest son, but on several occasions in the Bible God
intervenes, and another son is chosen.
(3) Some translations of the Bible seem to have
translated Gen 10: 21 incorrectly. Bibles like the RSV
(Revised Standard Version), the Living Bible, and my own
version NASV (New American Standard Version), appear to
translate Gen10:21 incorrectly, as they imply the Shem
is Noah’s oldest son.
Gen 10:21 (NASV)
“And also to Shem, the father of all the children of
Eber, and the older brother of Japheth, children were
born.”
The NASV verse 22 then goes on to list the descendants
of Shem, but verse 21 leaves the reader with the
impression that Shem was the older brother to Japheth.
Compare this to the rendering in the KJV (King James
Version), which reads.
“Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of
Eber, the brother of Japheth the older, even to him were
children given.”
And the NIV (New American Version) reads.
“Sons were also born to Shem, whose older brother was
Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber.”
The KJV and NIV both state that Japheth was the older
brother to Shem, and Gen 9:24 tells us that Ham is
Noah’s youngest son.
Gen 9:24
“When Noah awoke from his wine, he knew what his
youngest son had done to him.”
Therefore Shem was the middle son of the three sons born
to Noah.
Why bother working all this out? The reason is important
in understanding the next part of the timeline. Noah is
500 years old when Japheth is born (Gen 5:32), Noah was
502 years old when Shem was Born. Note: the Bible does
not specify the age of Noah when Shem was born, however
we can use scripture to calculate this, see comments on
Shem.

Gen 11:10-11
“These are the records of the generations of Shem.
Shem was one hundred years old, and became the father of
Arphaxed two years after the flood; and Shem lived five
hundred years after he became the father of Arphaxed,
and he had other sons and daughters.”
Unlike earlier passages of scripture on the genealogy,
the genealogy which starts in Genesis 11 does not
include a verse giving us the total number of years each
person lived. We are left to do the maths ourselves.
Shem was 100 when his son Arphaxed was born, and he
lived 500 years after the birth of Arphaxed. Therefore,
100 + 500 = 600 years, so all the days of Shem were 600
years.
|
|
Shem died 2158 years after creation |
|
2158 |
1853BC |
|
Shem was 100 years old when his son
Arphaxed was born, and Arphaxed was born 2 years after
the flood. Therefore Shem was 98 years old when the
flood came, we know from our study of Noah that Noah was
600 years old at the flood. So, Noah was 600 – 98 = 502
years old when Shem was born, 2 years after his older
brother Japheth.

Many Bible teachers and theologians place
Abram as Terah’s oldest son. They conclude this for two
main reasons.
(1) Abram is mentioned first in Gen 11:26 where Terah’s
sons are listed, which reads.
“And Terah lived seventy years, and became the father of
Abram, Nahor, and Haran.”
(2) Abram is listed in the Bible as the son of Terah who
carries on the blood line to Christ. Traditionally this
is the birth right, passed on from the father to the
oldest son, but on several occasions in the Bible God
intervenes, and another son is chosen.
What do we know about Terah’s three sons?
a) Haran becomes the father of Lot (Gen 11:27).
Haran also has at least one daughter call “Milcah” (Gen
11:29).
Haran dies in the presence of his father (Terah) in the
land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans (Gen 11:28).
b) Nahor’s grandfathers name was also Nahor.
Nahor took a wife, who was the daughter of his brother
Haran (Gen 11:29).
The name of Nahor’s wife (Haran’s daughter) was Milcah
(Gen 11:29).
Nahor and Milcah had eight children, Huz (his first
born), Buz, Kemuel (Gen 22:21), and then Chesed, Hazo,
Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel (Gen 22:22). Bethuel later
became the father of Rebekah (Gen 24:15, Gen 24:24), who
became the wife of Isaac (Gen 24:67, Gen 25:20) Abram’s
(by this time Abraham’s) second son. Bethuel was also
the father of Laban (Gen 24:29, Gen 25:20, Gen 27:42-43,
Gen 28:5 and others), Laban had two daughters, Leah and
Rachel, who became the wives of Jacob (Gen 29:23-25, Gen
29:28), Isaac’s son. So that we do not confuse Nahor,
Abram’s (Abraham’s) brother, with Nahor, Abram’s
(Abraham’s) grandfather, Gen 22:23 ads “Abraham’s
brother.”
Nahor and Reumah (Nahor’s concubine) had four children,
Tebah, Gaham, Thahash, and Maachah (Gen 22:24).
c) Abram (Abraham) takes his half sister Sarai as his
wife.
As Gen 11: 29 tells us the name of Abram’s (Abraham’s)
wife.
“And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The Name
of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife
was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah
and Iscah.”
And Gen 20: 12 tells us that Sarai was Abraham’s half
sister.
“Besides, she actually is my sister, the daughter of
my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she
became my wife;”
If Abram is not the oldest son, then when was he born,
and how old was Terah when he was born?
Genesis Chapter 11 ended with the death of Terah,
Abram’s (Abraham’s) father. Genesis Chapter 12 starts
with the call of Abram by God.
Gen 12:1-4
“(v1) Now the Lord said, ‘Go forth from your country,
and from your relatives and from your fathers house, to
the land which I will show you; (v2) and make you a
great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name
great; and so you shall be a blessing; (v3) and I will
bless you, and the one that curses you I will curse. And
in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’
(v4) So Abram went forth as the Lord had spoken to him
and Lot went with him. Now Abram was seventy five years
old when he departed Haran.”
Assuming that Abram (Abraham) actioned Gods command
pretty much straight away and even if he didn’t we can
prove that Abram was not born when Terah was 70 years
old. At this time in Abram’s life Terah his father has
died recently and God has instructed Abram to pack up
and move to the land that he will show him.
We know that Terah, Abram’s father died at age 205 (Gen
11:32), and we know that Abram (Abraham) was at most 75
years of age when Terah died. So we can calculate how
old Terah was when Abram was born.
Thus, 205 – 75 = 130, so Terah was at
most 130 when Abram (Abraham) was born, and not 70 years
of age, therefore Abram (Abraham) was not Terah’s oldest
son.

General Notes
While I was preparing this, and being a computer
programmer, I wrote a computer program to display and
calculate the dates and times of the timeline. As I was
testing the computer program I observed some things that
fascinated me.
(1) Spiritually Adam was the most significant person of
his age, he himself was created by God. He walked and
talked with God in the Garden of Eden, and he became the
genetic line that the saviour of the human race would be
born from.
(2) Adam died 930 years after creation, 126 years later
Noah was born. He too, is part of the genetic line to
Christ and is a type of Adam, in that all human life on
earth is descended from him. Noah is also a type of
Christ, in that he is the saviour of the human race and
escapes God’s judgment against sin on earth. Noah died
at the age of 950, 2006 years after creation and 350
years after the flood.
(3) Ten generations later Abraham was born. Due to the
shortening of the lifespan of the human race, fathers
began to outlive their sons. Shem, Noah’s son outlived
his son and his grandson. His great grandson Eber lived
464 years, but only outlived Shem by 29 years. Eber
himself outlived Abraham by 4 years.
What is more significant is that Noah died 2006 years
after creation (2005BC), almost exactly half way through
the Old testament age, 2 years later Abraham is born
2008 years after creation (2003BC). It almost appears as
if God was treading time or waiting for the appointed
time, as 9 generations went by, but only 2 years elapsed
on the biblical timeline.
It occurred to me that with the death of Eber the old
order had passed away, with the birth of Abraham the new
order began. A new covenant to bring salvation to the
human race was given, and the promise of a great nation.
Abraham did not live long enough to see the birth of the
nation Israel, but less than 200 years later the
foundation of a nation would be born. A nation that
ultimately would bring salvation to the world through
Jesus Christ, even though they didn’t recognise it at
the time.

Isaac was 60 years old when his sons Esau
and Jacob are born (Gen 25:26).
“And afterward his brother came forth with his hand
holding on to Esau’s heel, so his name was called Jacob;
and Isaac was sixty years old when she [Rebekah, his
wife gave birth to them.”
Esau and Jacob were twins, the Bible records that Jacob
was born with his hand holding the heel of his brother
who was born moments before.
Isaac married Rebekah when he was 40 years old (Gen
25:20).
“and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the
daughter of Bethuel and Aramean of Paddan-aram, the
sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife.”
Also see Gen (25:67) which reads.
“Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent,
and he took Rebekah, and he took Rebekah, and she became
his wife; and he loved her; thus Isaac was comforted
after his mother’s death.”
Rebekah was the sister of Laban, and the daughter of
Bethuel, who was the son of Nahor, Abraham’s brother.
That is, Rebekah was Nahor’s granddaughter, and Isaac’s
cousin.
When it was time to find Isaac a wife, Abraham made a
strange request. We also find the same request made when
Jacob, Isaac’s son seeks a wife. In the beginning of
Genesis Chapter 24, Abraham is asking his servant to go
to his country (Ur of the Chaldeans) and find his son a
wife (Gen 24:4). He makes his servant promise that he
will not let his son marry or take a Canaanite girl as a
wife (Gen 24:3). And in Genesis Chapter 28 Verses 1 and
2, we read how Isaac is instructing his son Jacob to go
to Paddan-aram the house of Bethuel.
Gen 28:1-2
“(v1) So Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and
charged him, and said to him, ‘You shall not take a wife
from the daughters of Canaan.’ (v2) ‘Arise, go to
Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s
father; and from there take to yourself a wife from the
daughters of Laban your mother’s brother’.”
Both Abraham and Isaac were concerned that their sons
did not take wives from the Canaanites, but gave
instructions that they take wives from a specific branch
of the family. Why was this? Were Abraham and Isaac
racist?
No! Abraham and Isaac were not racists. There is another
explanation; Genesis Chapter 9 Verses 20 to 27 tells how
after the flood Noah established a vineyard. When the
grapes of his vineyard were ready, Noah made some wine
and celebrated. Apparently he drank a little too much
and became drunk, and laid in his tent naked. Ham,
Noah’s youngest son saw his nakedness, in so doing
dishonoured his father, as he boasted about it to his
two older brothers. After hearing his boasts Shem and
Japheth took a garment, walked backwards into their
father’s tent and covered his nakedness, thus restoring
their father’s honour.
When Noah awoke the next day, he knew what his youngest
son had done. The Spirit of prophecy came on Noah,
Genesis 9:25 – 27 records the words he spoke.
Gen 9:25-27
“(v25) So he said, ‘Cursed be Canaan; a servant of
servants he shall be to his brothers.’ (v26) He also
said, ‘Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem; and let
Canaan be his servant. May God enlarge Japheth, and let
him dwell in the tents of Shem; and let Canaan be his
servant.’”
Why did the Holy Spirit choose to curse or prophesy
against Canaan when Ham had other sons who were not
included? Some commentators have suggested that maybe
Canaan was involved with his father in dishonouring of
Noah.
Perhaps Noah was not cursing Canaan, but the Holy Spirit
took this opportunity to foretell the future destiny of
Canaan’s descendants. Canaan became the father of the
Canaanites, who settled in the land of Canaan, the land
God promised to Abraham and his descendants. As we do
not have a date for this event, somewhere between 900 to
1000 years latter the children of Israel would enter the
land of Canaan after leaving Egypt and spending 40 years
wandering in the wilderness. Before entering the
Promised Land (land of Canaan), the children of Israel
were commanded to drive out, dispossess, or destroy the
inhabitants of the land (the Canaanites) and possess
their land (Num 33:51-53).
Numbers 33:51-53
“(v51) Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them,
‘When you cross over the Jordon into the land of Canaan,
(v52) then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of
the land from before you, and destroy all their figure
stones, and destroy all their molten images and demolish
all their high places; (v53) and you shall take
possession of the land and live in it, for I have given
the land to you to possess it.’”
So back to my question, why did Abraham and Isaac not
want their sons to marry Canaanite woman?
If Isaac and Jacob had taken Canaanite wives, then their
descendants would have been the servants of servants.
How could Christ be the King of Kings and the Lord of
Lords if he was destined to be the servant of servants?
Therefore, two of Noah’s son’s blood lines had to stay
pure so as to provide a pure genetic path to Christ.
As history progressed, most of the Canaanites were
destroyed or died out. As a result Christ may never have
been born, if he had been descended from the Canaanites.
Note: The Israelites failed to drive out or destroy the
Canaanites in three regions of the land of Canaan. Num
33:55 contains a warning to the children of Israel, Num
33:55 warns of the consequences of failing to driving
out or dispossess the Canaanites.
Num 33:55
“But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the
land from before you, then it shall come about that
those whom you let remain of them will become as pricks
in your eyes and as thorns in your side, and they shall
trouble you in the land in which you live.”
It is interesting that the three regions where the
children of Israel failed to drive out the inhabitants
of the land of Canaan are the three trouble spots in
Israel today. The three trouble spots today are the Gaza
Strip, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights.
In summing up this chapter there are some observations
we can make. There are 10 generations from Adam to Noah,
spanning 2006 years. There are 10 generations from Shem
(Noah’s son) to Abraham, spanning 625 years. Therefore,
there are 20 generations from Adam to Abraham, spanning
2183 years.

There is another interesting insight hidden or
encoded into the genealogy of the first ten generations
which I would like to share with you. I cannot claim
the credit for this particular insight as one of my
Bible College lectures shared it with our class one
morning, it can also be found in the book called “COSMIC
CODES” by Chuck Missler. If we take the names of the
first ten generations and write their meaning next to
them, we find that they make a message when read one
after another as a sentence.
-
Adam - means: Man
-
Seth - means: Appointed
-
Enosh - means: Mortal
-
Kenan - means: Sorrow
-
Mahalalel - means: The Blessed God
-
Jared - means: Shall come down
-
Enoch - means: Teaching
-
Methuselah - means: His death shall bring
-
Lamech - means: The despairing
-
Noah - means: Rest or comfort
So if we put all this together we get the following.
Man is appointed mortal sorrow, but the blessed God
shall come down teaching that His death shall bring the
despairing rest.
The descendants of Terah
